Handcrafted Metal Engraving

A timeless craft of precision, patience, and permanence.

What is Hand Engraving?

Engraving is one of humanity's oldest art forms, from ancient armor decoration to Renaissance intaglio. Unlike laser marking, hand engraving is the physical removal of metal using hardened tools. Every line—often only a fraction of a millimeter deep—shapes light and touch. At Ateljé Vagabond we carry this tradition forward with fully handcrafted engraving made in Sweden.

Working primarily on high-grade aluminum, steel, brass, carbon, and titanium, every line—often only a fraction of a millimeter deep—shapes how light reflects off the metal and how the final composition feels. Whether it's architectural signage, bespoke interior pieces, or heirloom gifts, each piece is fully handcrafted in our Swedish studio, blending traditional methods with modern Nordic design.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between engraving and etching?

Engraving physically cuts metal with a sharp tool for crisp, brilliant lines; etching dissolves metal chemically or electrically for softer, matte textures.

  • Can I send my own item (knife, watch, jewelry) for engraving?

Yes, we frequently work on client-owned items. However, we must first assess the material (e.g., hardened steel vs. brass) and geometry to ensure it can be safely clamped and engraved. Please send us photos for an assessment.

  • How durable is hand engraving?

Extremely durable—the design is cut into the metal, not printed on top, so it will not rub off.

  • How do you permanently write text on hard metal?

To ensure text is truly permanent, we use hand engraving to physically remove material with a hardened steel burin. Unlike laser marking or printing, this creates a deep, brilliant cut that becomes an integral part of the metal and will never rub off.

  • Can I do metal engraving myself at home?

Hobby tools exist, but achieving a professional, heirloom-quality finish requires years of muscle memory. Hand engraving cuts the metal rather than scratching it, ensuring a permanence that DIY tools rarely achieve without risking damage to the item.

  • Can you engrave custom designs?

Yes. Every piece is bespoke—signage, interior details, heirlooms, and gifts are all crafted to order.

  • How is the cost of a custom engraving calculated?

Since every commission is bespoke, pricing depends on complexity. Simple initials are accessible, while intricate scenes or premium additions like metal inlay (gold/silver) and selective plating are quoted individually. Contact us for a personalized estimate.
